Wails and tears have gripped Rajendrabati village in Manda upazila of Naogaon as six victims of a tragic road accident in Tangail were laid to rest today (26 May).
Six of the deceased were buried side by side after a namaz-e-janaza in the village early in the morning.
The entire village turned into a scene of grief as bodies of the victims arrived one after another, with relatives and locals gathering in large numbers to catch a final glimpse of their loved ones.
Rows of coffins were placed in open fields as mourners broke down in tears.
Local residents said they had never witnessed such a mass tragedy in the area before.
The air in Rajendrabati and surrounding villages of Manda remained heavy with mourning as relatives from distant areas rushed home for the last rites.
Women and children were seen crying uncontrollably beside the bodies, while others stood in silence, stunned by the scale of the loss.
The victims were among 10 people from Naogaon killed early Monday when a truck carrying iron rods overturned on the Dhaka–Tangail highway in Kalihati upazila of Tangail. The accident left 15 people dead in total.
After post-mortem examinations at Tangail General Hospital, the bodies were handed over to families yesterday evening and reached Rajendrabati early today.
At around 10:45am, the six bodies were brought to a field in Rajendrabati, where a single janaza was held before burial.
The remaining four were buried following separate funeral prayers in their home villages.
Thousands of people from nearby villages joined the funeral prayers, along with local administration and police officials.
Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr A N M Belalur Rashid, DIG of Rajshahi Range Mohammad Shahjahan, MPs Dr Ikramul Bari Tipu and Mostafizur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Akhtar Jahan Sathi, and Manda Police Station OC Khorshed Alam were among those present.
The Divisional Commissioner said the government has already provided Tk25,000 and relief assistance to each affected family, adding that all possible support would be ensured.
“This is an extremely heartbreaking incident. We are all deeply saddened. Losing six people from one village together is truly devastating,” he said.
He also assured continued administrative support for the bereaved families.
The victims were returning home to celebrate Eid with their families when the accident occurred early Monday at Saratail in Kalihati.
