The Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka ABM Obaidul Islam has said that the ideals and spirit of Kazi Nazrul Islam should inspire efforts to build a peaceful, harmonious and non-communal society.
Speaking at the memorial discussion held at the poet’s grave premises marking Nazrul’s 127th birth anniversary today (25 May), he said Nazrul’s life and literary works teach people to protest against injustice and oppression.
Despite hardship and poverty, he continued writing and contributed to every branch of Bengali literature, he added.
He also described Nazrul as the poet of equality, rebellion, love and peace, stressing the need for greater research and practice to preserve his philosophy.
Among others, DU Pro-Vice-Chancellors Professor Abdus Salam and Professor Dr Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane spoke at the event.
Chairman of the university’s Bangla Department Professor Sirajul Islam (Siraj Salekin) conducted the event.
Earlier, teachers, students and staff of University of Dhaka placed wreaths and offered prayers at the poet’s grave following a procession from Aparajeyo Bangla.
