Bidyanondo Foundation has launched its “Tk1 Qurbani Market” initiative, allowing more than 500 homeless and low-income families to purchase essential food items and Eid supplies at a symbolic price.
The market was officially inaugurated today (23 May) by Chattogram City Mayor Shahadat Hossain.
According to organisers, each family received goods worth between Tk600 and Tk700 on average. Participants were given specially issued dummy coins worth Tk10, allowing them to choose products according to their own needs and preferences.
The temporary supermarket featured around 17 essential items, including rice, lentils, sugar, eggs, cooking oil, clothing and bags.
Items were offered at symbolic prices, including 1 kg of rice for Tk1, four packets of noodles for Tk1.
According to the Bidyanondo Foundation, the primary aim of the initiative was not only to support disadvantaged people ahead of Eid, but also to preserve their dignity and freedom of choice while receiving assistance.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Shahadat Hossain praised the initiative and said, “This is truly a commendable effort that supports underprivileged people while preserving their civic dignity. At a time of economic hardship, the way Bidyanondo has stood beside the poor during Eid deserves appreciation and gratitude. I hope such humanitarian activities will continue in the future.”
Jamal Uddin, board member of Bidyanondo Foundation, said, “We do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable while receiving assistance. Eid is a celebration for everyone, and our goal is to ensure that this joy reaches every household with dignity and respect.”
The foundation also called on people from all walks of life to become involved in similar humanitarian efforts in order to help build a more inclusive society.
