Police have detained a schoolteacher in Satkhira Sadar upazila following allegations that he made comments hurting Muslim religious sentiments during a class lecture.
The detained teacher, Gouranga Sarkar, teaches mathematics at Balli Mohammad Mujibur Rahman Secondary School. He was taken into custody by Satkhira Sadar police yesterday (19 May) at noon.
According to the school authorities, the incident took place on Sunday (17 May) during a Class 9 mathematics lesson.
Headmaster (acting) Azharuzzaman Mukul said the teacher allegedly made objectionable remarks regarding the Azan and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) during the class.
He said the teacher allegedly referred to restrictions on mosque loudspeakers in India’s West Bengal and remarked that Azan broadcasts through loudspeakers should also be stopped in Bangladesh.

The teacher also allegedly said the loud broadcasting of the Fajr Azan and other calls to prayer created difficulties for followers of the Sanatan religion.
Although the matter initially remained undisclosed, tension spread in the area yesterday after students informed locals about the alleged remarks.
Police later went to the school and detained the teacher to bring the situation under control.
Satkhira Sadar police said legal action was being taken over the incident.
