At least seven people, including a headmaster of a government primary school, were killed and 27 others injured in road accidents in five districts across the country over the past two days.
In Bogura, a speeding truck hit a motorcycle driven by the headmaster in the Laldah area of Shibganj upazila around 9pm on Saturday, leaving him dead on the spot, said officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station Shahinuzzaman.
Deceased M Ashraful Islam Pramanik, 58, was the headmaster of Chakhabiber Para Govt Primary School in Sadar upazila.
In Dianjpur, two youths were killed in a motorcycle accident on the Dinajpur-Rangpur highway in the district on Saturday evening. The deceased were Jabir Khaled, 18, and Riyad Hossain.
Both victims were Class-XI students at Amena Baki Model Residential School and College in Chirirbandar.
According to police and family sources, the accident occurred when the motorcycle collided with a private car at Garodanga Bridge in Fatehjangpur union, leaving Jabir and Riyad, who was riding pillion, injured.
They were initially taken to Syedpur for treatment and later transferred to a hospital in Rangpur where they were declared dead.
In Chandpur, a security guard of a hospital was killed after being run over by a bus in Hajiganj upazila yesterday morning.
Deceased Billal Hossain, 48, was from Muragaon village in Shahrasti upazila of the district.
According to police and witnesses, a bus of “Boogdad Paribahan” ran over Billal on the wrong side while trying to overtake another bus, leaving him dead on the spot around 8am in the Toragarh area on the Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway, said Hajiganj Police Station OC Abdul Mannan.
In Sylhet, two people were killed and 15 others injured when a bus hit a stationary bus on the Sylhet-Dhaka Highway at Tajpur Kadamtala in Osmaninagar upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Sohel, 30, driver of the bus and son of Tajul Islam of Narsingdi district and his helper Emon, 20.
The accident occurred around 6:30 am when the Sylhet-bound Saintmartin Paribahan knocked down a stationary bus of “Jatayat Paribahan” as the duo was repairing it, leaving two killed on the spot and 15 others injured, said Sherpur Highway Police Station OC Abu Taher Dewan.
In Gaibandha, a woman was killed and at least 12 passengers were injured when a passenger bus overturned in a roadside ditch in the Thutiapukur area on the Palashbari-Gaibandha road in the morning.
According to sources, the accident occurred when the driver of a Dhaka-bound bus lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch before overturning.
The woman passenger died on the spot, Palashbari Police Station OC Mojammel Haque said.
