63 foreign nationals remanded for two days in Ctg online scam case

A Chattogram court has granted two-day remand for 63 foreign nationals arrested on allegations of involvement in online scamming in the city’s West Khulshi-Jalalabad area.

The court also directed the police to submit the investigation report within 20 days.

Chattogram Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhidul Islam passed the order today (15 September).

Mohammad Hasan Iqbal Chowdhury, acting deputy commissioner (prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

” The court has granted two-day remand for the 63 foreign nationals arrested in the case. It has also directed the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), the investigating agency, to submit the investigation report within 20 days,” he said.

The accused were produced before the court under police escort this morning. They were present in the courtroom during the hearing on the remand petition.

Police filed a remand petition on Sunday (13 September) in the case lodged against the 63 foreign nationals. Following a hearing today, the court granted the two-day remand.

Meanwhile, police have applied to show Mohammad Mohsin arrested in the same case in connection with the recovery of 118 grammes of cocaine from a courier service in the city on 5 September. Police have also sought his remand.

The hearing on the application to show Mohsin arrested in the case is scheduled for 12:30pm today. Details will be known after the hearing.

Earlier, Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdur Rahim told The Business Standard that Mohsin had links with the 63 foreign nationals and had rented an eight-storey building for them to stay in.

“A few days ago, Mohsin sent 118 grammes of cocaine to a person in Dhaka through a courier service. The consignment was later returned. While investigating the incident, police learned about the whereabouts of the 63 foreign nationals,” the OC said.
