Customs intelligence officials have recovered 50 gold bars weighing around 6kg and estimated to be worth Tk11 crore from the toilet of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The gold bars were not found in any passenger’s baggage but were hidden inside the aircraft’s toilet, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The customs intelligence team recovered the gold after flight BG-585, arriving from Singapore, landed at the airport at around 6:30pm yesterday (21 September).
The NBR did not identify anyone as being involved in the smuggling.
However, it said an investigation would be conducted to determine who had hidden the gold on the aircraft, how it was planned to be taken out of the airport and whether an organised smuggling syndicate was involved.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate will continue intelligence surveillance and operations to identify and seize larger consignments of smuggled gold and bring those involved in such networks to justice, the release added.
