Four people were killed and five others injured after a passenger bus collided head-on with a local jeep on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway this morning (13 August).
The accident occurred around 9:30am in the Khuntakhali area of Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar, said Sub-Inspector Md Samsuzzaman of the Malumghat Highway Police outpost.
The deceased were identified as Jasim Uddin, 25, of Segunbagicha in Chakaria; Rafiq, 29, of West Gajaria in Eidgaon; Shahed, 27, of Khuntakhali; and Ziabul Haque, 25, of Eidgaon.
Quoting locals, SI Samsuzzaman said a passenger bus heading towards Cox’s Bazar collided with the jeep coming from the opposite direction.
“Nine people travelling in the jeep were seriously injured in the crash. The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene immediately after the accident,” he said.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Jasim Uddin died while undergoing treatment at Malumghat Memorial Christian Hospital, while the other three died at Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, according to the police official.
“The five injured people remain under treatment at hospital. Police have seized both vehicles involved in the crash from the scene and legal proceedings are under way,” he added.
