Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-4) arrested four people after a shooting incident in Kafrul over a demand of Tk1 crore in extortion from a garment businessman.
They were arrested in the early hours today (20 April) from Mirpur area during an operation, said Company Commander K N Rai Niyoti at a press briefing at RAB-4 headquarters in Mirpur-1. The arrestees are Rana, Md Sagar Sheikh, Md Kalu, and Shashi.
He said on Saturday (18 April), Kamrul Islam, owner of AKM Apparels garment factory in Kafrul, was working in his office when 12 to 13 miscreants entered the room.
They threatened him and demanded Tk1 crore. When he refused, two unidentified miscreants took out pistols and fired two rounds of blank shots inside the office.
The attackers vandalised the office locker and threatened to kill him if the money was not paid within three days. They also took away the DVR and hard disk of the CCTV system before leaving.
A case was later filed at the Kafrul police station by Kamrul Islam. RAB conducted an investigation and identified and arrested four suspects in connection with the incident.
K N Rai Niyoti said Rana was the planner of the incident. He selected the factory after conducting a recce, as the area was relatively remote with poor access roads and considered suitable for extortion.
He added that the arrestees were involved in extortion, drug trade, and other criminal activities in Mirpur, Kafrul, and surrounding areas. Several cases have already been filed against them at different police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
