A large quantity of chemically treated, unripe mangoes was seized and destroyed in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira yesterday afternoon (23 April).
The operation was conducted in the Shuilpur area under Bharashimla union, where the artificially ripened mangoes were recovered.
Kaliganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Moinul Islam Khan said, “The operation was carried out following reports that unripe mangoes were being artificially ripened using chemicals and transported to Dhaka. During the drive, authorities seized 3,360 kg of mangoes packed in 168 crates from a Dhaka-bound pickup van.”
He added that it was initially suspected that the mangoes had been chemically treated for sale in the capital, potentially deceiving consumers.
Moinul further added that the pickup driver, Shahin Hossain, was fined Tk1,000 for transporting mangoes mixed with harmful chemicals.
“He was later released upon signing a bond, pledging not to engage in such activities in the future.”
Following the operation, the seized mangoes were destroyed through a mobile court near the Shuilpur BGB camp along the embankment road.
The administration stated that such drives would continue in the interest of protecting public health.
