Thirty women entrepreneurs were honoured in Sitakunda of Chattogram today (25 July) in recognition of their contribution to the local rural economy through various entrepreneurial initiatives.
Another 50 women entrepreneurs who received training from Karughar Training Centre were also awarded certificates at the event.
The programme was organised by Try Women and Youth Development Foundation and Karughar Training Centre to mark the inauguration of the centre’s new training facility on the third floor of Secure City Shopping Complex in Sitakunda.
The organisers also honoured Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) Chief Executive Dr Arifur Rahman, B&F Care Foundation, former Sitakunda Upazila Youth Development Officer Mohammad Shah Alam and former Upazila Agriculture Officer agriculturist Mohammad Habibullah for their contributions to the development of Sitakunda.
The event was chaired by Irene Nesa Munmun, founder of Try Women and Youth Development Foundation and Karughar Training Centre. She received the Joyeeta Award in 2024 after being selected as the best Joyeeta at both the Sitakunda upazila and Chattogram district levels.
Among the guests were Mohammad Shah Alam, now serving as the Youth Development Officer of Mirsharai Upazila; former Sitakunda Agriculture Officer agriculturist Mohammad Habibullah; Sitakunda Social Welfare Federation President Lion Gias Uddin; YPSA’s Training Officer Shamim Ahmed; B&F Care Foundation Coordinator Lion Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan; and representatives of various social and development organisations.
Speakers said women make up nearly half of the country’s population and can play a significant role in strengthening the national economy by becoming entrepreneurs. They stressed that skills development through training is essential for empowering women economically.
They also said Karughar Training Centre has been working to make women in Sitakunda self-reliant by providing training in handicrafts and other income-generating skills.
Established in 2018, the centre has helped more than 500 women become financially independent through its training programmes, according to the organisers.
The speakers urged participants to continue enhancing their skills through training and create self-employment opportunities to contribute to their families and the broader economy.
