A court in Mymensingh today sentenced three men to death and fined each Tk 200,000 for the gang rape and murder of a five-year-old child Nichhamoni in Dhobaura upazila.
The court simultaneously sentenced the fourth offender with a 10year of imprisonment.
The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the sentences in the sensational case concerning the abduction, gang rape and killing of Nichhamoni (5).
The three convicted to death are Arif Mia (19), Hasan Rakib (20) and Abu Saim (18).
The underage accused Maruf (16) was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by Judge Mezbaha Uddin Ahmed of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Judge Sudipta Sarker of the Child Violence Suppression Tribunal announced the verdict at a hearing held this afternoon.
The rulings were delivered in two separate courts with the accused present, the case’s public prosecutor, Special Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Bazlul Karim Chowdhury confirmed.
On the defence side, the state counsel was Adv. Khandakar Badrul Alam while the accused were represented by Adv. Mokbul Hossain.
Adv. Mojibur Rahman also appeared in the case as an additional public prosecutor.
According to the case record, on the afternoon of 14 June, 2026 in Dhobaura, Nichhamoni was gang raped and then thrown into a river, where she died.
On 15 June, Nichhamoni’s father filed a case at Dhobaura police station naming unknown persons as accused.
Police later arrested four suspects and they confessed their involvement during police interrogation and recorded statements before the court.
Police submitted the charge sheet against the four accused on 23 June, just nine days after the incident.
After recording testimony from witnesses over several consecutive days, the tribunal, with participation from both sides, delivered the verdict 25 days after the incident.
