Three people were injured in a clash involving gunfire and crude bomb explosions between two factions of the BNP in Munshiganj’s Mollakandi union early today (22 October).
The clash broke out around 4am in Purba Makhati village in Munshiganj Sadar upazila amid a dispute over local dominance, according to police and locals.
Police arrested three people, including a Jubo Dal leader, in connection with the incident.
The injured were identified as Abu Sayeed, 65, Saiful Hawladar, 21, and Md Hridoy, 22. Abu Sayeed and Saiful were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Hridoy received initial treatment locally.
Saiful lost three fingers on his right hand when a crude bomb, locally known as a cocktail, exploded, his family said.
Local sources said the clash involved supporters of district BNP member Atik Mallik and Mollakandi union BNP President Awlad Hossain Mollah.
Police identified the arrestees as Milton Mallik, 45, vice-president of the union Jubo Dal, Md Munna, 40, and Al-Amin, 23.
Police and local residents said the two factions had been seeking to establish control over the area ahead of the upcoming union parishad elections. Tensions escalated when members of the rival groups gathered in Purba Makhati village early Thursday, leading to gunfire and repeated crude bomb explosions.
Saiful’s mother, Peya Begum, alleged that Milton Mallik and his associates, who support Atik Mallik, attacked her younger son’s home and fired indiscriminately.
She said Saiful tried to flee out of fear, but the attackers threw a crude bomb at him. The explosion severed three fingers on his right hand, she added.
Attempts to contact Atik Mallik and Awlad Hossain Mollah for comment were unsuccessful, as their mobile phones were switched off.
Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Taslim Uddin said police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the clash and brought the situation under control.
Three people had been arrested in connection with the incident, and the process of filing a case was underway, he said.
The situation was calm, with additional police deployed in the area, the OC added.
