Three Bangladesh Air Force members killed in an accident near the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have been laid to rest following a funeral parade and janaza held with military honours today (1 September).
The janaza and funeral parade for the deceased were held with military honours at the C-130 hangar of Bangladesh Air Force Base Bir Uttam AK Khandker in Kurmitola, Dhaka, at 5:30pm today, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman attended the janaza.
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan laid wreaths on the coffins of the deceased to pay tribute to them.
Family members of the deceased, a former chief of air staff, senior government officials, senior military officers and other Air Force personnel were also present at the ceremony.
After the janaza, the bodies were taken to their respective village homes. Air Force representatives will later assist in completing their burial with due military honours.
The Bangladesh Air Force expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. It also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.
Earlier, yesterday (31 August) at around 9:35pm, when a Bangladesh Air Force jeep carrying seven members of the Quick Response Force (QRF) was involved in a crash while they were on duty in the third terminal area of the airport.
Air Force personnel immediately rescued the injured members and took them to Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Doctors at the hospital declared the three members dead.
The four other Air Force members who sustained serious injuries in the accident are undergoing treatment at CMH, according to the Bangladesh Air Force.
Since 5 August 2024, Bangladesh Air Force personnel have been deployed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and other key airports under the “In Aid to Civil Power” arrangement to support law and order, passenger safety and overall security.
