A joint team fined two traders Tk1 lakh in total and seized 4,815kg of illegal polythene during a drive in the capital’s Shyambazar area today (29 August).
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the Department of Environment and Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted the drive around 4pm, reads a DSCC press release.
The team fined the traders Tk50,000 each for illegally selling and storing polythene under Sections 6(a) and 15(1), Table 4(b), of the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995. The traders paid the fines immediately and signed undertakings promising not to engage in such activities again.
The team found the polythene in two warehouses, packed in 142 sacks, with an estimated market value of Tk8,18,450.
The team handed over the seized polythene to Department of Environment Inspector Mohammad Motahar Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan office for further legal action.
DSCC Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam led the drive. Shyambazar Market President Gani Mia, Department of Environment Inspector Mohammad Motahar Hossain and Assistant Commissioner (Patrol) Ferdous Mehboob also attended the operation, along with police personnel.
The authorities said they will continue joint drives against illegal polythene sales and storage in the public interest, according to the press release.
