A two-day festival marking the birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray is set to begin at Jahangirnagar University today (3 May).
Organised by the History and Heritage Council in collaboration with the High Commission of India in Dhaka and Jahangirnagar University, the festival will be held today and tomorrow in the seminar hall of the university’s Zahir Raihan Auditorium.
The festival will be inaugurated on the opening day by Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan.
Narpat Singh, counsellor (development partnership) at the Indian High Commission, will attend as a special guest.
On the second day, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon will attend as the chief guest, while Pawan Badhe, acting high commissioner of India to Bangladesh, will join as the guest of honour.
Organisers said prominent filmmakers and researchers from Bangladesh will discuss Ray’s multifaceted life, artistic vision and cinematic legacy during the festival.
An art workshop, supported by the university’s Fine Arts Department, has also been arranged on the auditorium premises to add vibrancy to the event.
Teachers, students and renowned artists from across the country are expected to take part.
Organisers hope the festival will help introduce Ray’s artistic philosophy and cultural contributions more deeply to the younger generation, while strengthening the continuity of Bengali culture.
