Two police personnel assigned to guard a July Memorial in Jashore have been closed following an incident in which unidentified people set fire to the monument in the early hours of today (2 November).
The incident took place at the Bakultala intersection in Jashore town.
A 35-second video of the incident later circulated on Facebook, triggering anger among local residents. The footage shows two people setting fire to the memorial under the cover of darkness before fleeing the area.
After the fire broke out, three young men were seen hurriedly leaving the monument’s main platform. Voices chanting slogans including “Sheikh Hasina” and “Joy Bangla” could also reportedly be heard in the video.
Burn marks were visible on the memorial when it was inspected around noon. Additional police personnel have since been deployed at the site, while surveillance has been strengthened at key locations across the town.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mirajul Islam said two police personnel had been assigned to guard the memorial every evening and were on duty at the time of the incident.
“Two miscreants entered the memorial premises and set fire to it before fleeing,” he said.
“We have collected CCTV footage from cameras near the monument and are analysing it to identify and arrest those involved.”
He added that the two police personnel assigned to guard the site had been closed.
