A fisherman from Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur district found a 2.75kg hilsa in the sea and later sold it for Tk13,250 at Motirhat fish market of the upazila this morning (24 September).
Fisherman, Faruk Majhi, sold the fish to a Dhaka-based fish trader, Bahar Mia.
Ibrahim Khokon, a wholesaler at Motirhat fish market, said, “Local fisherman Faruk Majhi returned from the sea after a week and sold hilsa worth Tk1.5 lakh. The 2.75kg fish was sold separately for Tk13,250.”

Asked about the expected price of the fish in Dhaka, Bahar Mia said, “We will sell it with a profit of at least Tk1,000 to Tk2,000. The Dhaka traders may then add another Tk1,000 to Tk2,000 in profit. Overall, a large hilsa of this size could sell for around Tk16,000 to Tk17,000 in the Dhaka market.”
He added that traders typically make a profit of Tk50 to Tk100 per kilogram on smaller fish, while larger hilsa can generate higher profits.
Meanwhile, local wholesaler Anwar said hilsa catches in the river had declined. At the same time, rising fuel prices have made fishing increasingly difficult for fishermen.
