14 detained as activists of banned Chhatra League, Jubo League hold meeting in Ctg

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police has detained 14 leaders and activists of the banned organisations Chhatra League and Jubo League during what law enforcement has termed their secret meeting in the Halishahar area of the city.

The operation was conducted around 9:30pm last night (3 May) on the fourth floor of a restaurant in the Nayabazar Bishwaroad area.

Police sources said there has been a recent increase in rallies and organised activities under the banner of Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, in different parts of the city. 

On 25 April, separate processions were held at Polo Ground under Kotwali Police Station, OR Nizam Road in Panchlaish, and Karnaphuli Market.

Deputy Commissioner (DB North) Habibur Rahman said the meeting was being held to form a new platform named “Sheikh Hasina Oikya Parishad”. 

Acting on a tip-off, police carried out the raid and detained 14 people, he added.

He said the detainees are linked to Chhatra League and Jubo League and were discussing activities of the new platform. 

Efforts are ongoing to identify and detain others involved. The detainees are being questioned, he added.

They will be turned over to Halishahar Police Station by 4pm today (4 May), the police officer said.

The DB said surveillance was increased following recent incidents, leading to this operation.

Similar programmes were earlier reported in the Anannya residential area and Outer Ring Road, videos of which later spread on social media.
