Virginia has become a key front in a nationwide redistricting battle. After clearing numerous hurdles, a proposed amendment to the state constitution, which attempts to eliminate all but one Republican district, will go to Virginia voters. Early voting has seen high turnout.
The current congressional map is nearly even, with six Democratic districts and five Republican districts. The proposed map, which is intended to result in 10 Democratic districts, would take effect this year. If it passes, it could combine with a new map in California to largely cancel out the Republican gains made elsewhere.
