The last-minute announcement that Senator Steve Daines would not seek re-election essentially cleared the field in the Republican primary for Kurt Alme, the U.S. attorney for Montana. Alme, who is Daines’s chosen successor, was quickly endorsed by President Trump. Republicans Charles Walking Child and Lee Calhoun are also running for the Republican nomination. Reilly Neill, a former state legislator, is one of the more notable Democrats running in the primary of a state that saw its last statewide Democrat, Jon Tester, lose his re-election bid in 2024. Another high profile candidate in the general election is Seth Bodnar, the former president of the University of Montana, who is running as an independent.
