An open race to represent the Omaha metropolitan area should be interesting to watch because the congressional district was one of only three in the United States that elected a Republican representative in 2024 while also voting for Kamala Harris over Donald J. Trump. With Representative Don Bacon not seeking re-election, Brinker Harding, a member of the Omaha City Council, is expected to be the Republican nominee. The Democratic primary, meanwhile, has numerous candidates, including John Cavanaugh, a state senator; Denise Powell, a founder of the political group Women Who Run Nebraska; and James Leuschen, a former policy director for Representative Steny Hoyer.
