A vessel carrying 61,000 metric tonnes of wheat from the United States has reached the outer anchorage of Chattogram port today (1 April), said a press release from the Ministry of Food.
The ship, MV MP Ultramax 2, arrived under cash purchase contract G to G-03, signed under a memorandum of understanding between the governments of the United States and Bangladesh.
Earlier, under the same G to G-03 agreement, 58,457 metric tonnes arrived in the first shipment and 62,150 metric tonnes in the second shipment.
Sampling and testing of the wheat onboard have already begun, and necessary steps have been taken to unload the cargo quickly.
Of the total 61,000 metric tonnes, 29,450 metric tonnes will be discharged at Chattogram, while the remaining 31,550 metric tonnes will be unloaded at Mongla port.
The press release added that Bangladesh has already started importing wheat from the United States on a government-to-government basis. All wheat imported under G to G-01 and G to G-02 agreements has already arrived in the country.
Under G to G-01, a total of 237,845 metric tonnes was imported, while 230,039 metric tonnes came under G to G-02, bringing the combined total to 467,884 metric tonnes.
The country’s annual wheat demand is around 7 million metric tonnes, while domestic production is about 1 million metric tonnes. The remaining demand is met through imports by the public and private sectors.
