UNCTAD Secy General Rebecca meets foreign minister to discuss global economy

Rebeca Grynspan, secretary-general United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), called on Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York today (17 March).

During the meeting, they discussed the current global economic situation amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

They noted that the conflict poses significant risks to the global economy.

Disruptions in international trade and turmoil in energy markets are already affecting developing countries, particularly the poorest, who are witnessing a reversal of years of progress, the discussion further added.

Both officials urged all relevant parties to avoid further escalation and to seek a diplomatic solution urgently.

Grynspan, who previously served as vice president of Costa Rica, is a candidate for the position of secretary-general of the United Nations, while Foreign Minister Rahman is a candidate for the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

They also discussed their respective candidatures.

Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, permanent representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, was present during the meeting.
