A group of local people attacked police and snatched away two suspected drug offenders in Sylhet while they were being taken to a police station with drugs recovered during a police operation.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6pm on Tuesday (17 March) when a team from Shahparan Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Alif, intercepted a pickup in front of Doloipara Sakina in the city.
During the operation, police recovered 297 Yaba tablets and arrested Shahidul Islam, 45, son of Samsu Mia and Jabed Ahmed, 26, both residents of the city’s Alibagh area.
However, as police were taking them to the police station, some 30-35 local people, including Abdul Ahad, Enam, Sakib and Rebul, launched an attack on the police and snatched the accused from police custody.
However, no police personnel were injured, and they were trying to arrest the accused, said Manjurul.
Two separate cases were filed in this connection.
