An accident occurred in the Kalurghat area of Chattogram when a truck lost control while boarding a ferry and fell into the river, leaving the driver injured.
The incident took place around 9:30pm yesterday (2 April) near the Kalurghat Bridge area under Boalkhali upazila.
Police said the injured driver, Md Osman, 35, is a resident of Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
Police further added that the truck was empty at the time when it fell into the river and will be seized after recovery.
Boalkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mehedi Hasan Faruk told The Business Standard that the truck had transported rods from Chattogram and was returning after unloading in Boalkhali, while attempting to board the ferry in haste, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river.
He said, “The driver sustained injuries in the incident. He was rescued by locals and taken to Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for advanced treatment. He is now out of danger.”
Sub-officer of Boalkhali Fire Service and Civil Defence Alok Chakma, told The Business Standard that upon receiving the information, they reached the scene and found the truck submerged in the river.
“The driver had already been rescued due to the prompt efforts of locals. As there are no divers available in Boalkhali, it was not possible to begin recovery operations at night. The operation will start once divers and necessary equipment arrive from Agrabad in Chattogram,” he said.
