Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam today (11 April) said the government is working to bring tourist destinations in Cox’s Bazar, including the Marine Drive, under free internet services.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a meeting titled “Internet for All”, organised by the district administration at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in Cox’s Bazar.
Mahbub said, “Under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, efforts are ongoing to ensure internet services reach people at their doorsteps across the country. The government is also prioritising satellite-based internet services for fishing trawlers operating in the Bay of Bengal to enhance their safety.”
Speaking at the event, the minister further said, “Four airports in the country have already been brought under free Wi-Fi coverage. Free internet services are also available on four intercity trains, including the Tourist Express and the Cox’s Bazar Express.”
The meeting was chaired by Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan. Among others, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Secretary of the Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry Abdun Naser Khan, and Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police ANM Sazedur Rahman were present.
Discussions at the meeting focused on safe internet usage, cybersecurity, the role of internet access in education, and ensuring connectivity at the grassroots level. Officials from various government and private organisations also attended.
Later, the minister inaugurated free internet services for passengers at Cox’s Bazar railway station and visited the submarine cable station.
