Two bullets hit the body of Azizur Rahman, alias Musabbir, a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, who was killed in the Tejturi Bazar area of the capital. One bullet hit Sufian Byapari, alias Masud, general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Owners’ Association, who was with him at the time.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Ibne Mizan, confirmed the matter today (8 January). He said one bullet hit Musabbir’s elbow and another his abdomen, while Sufian Byapari was shot in the abdomen.
Three 7.65 mm bullet casings were recovered from the scene. At around 8:20pm last night (7 January), Musabbir and Abu Sufian were shot in front of the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (AITVET) center in the Tejturi Bazar area, behind Star Kabab in Tejgaon.
Police and eyewitnesses said the two were heading towards the main road through the alley when two assailants, lying in wait in a small dark lane in front of the AITVET center, opened fire on them and fled towards the main road.
The injured men then staggered back into the alley and collapsed a short distance inside. They were taken to BRB Hospital on Panthapath, where Musabbir was declared dead. Seriously injured, Abu Sufian was later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Musabbir’s body has been kept at DMCH for autopsy.
This morning, Musabbir’s wife, Suraiya Begum, 42, filed a murder case with Tejgaon Police Station, naming four to five unidentified accused. In the case statement, she mentioned that her husband had many enemies and had been facing threats to his life.
DC Ibne Mizan said police have so far spotted two suspects in CCTV footage and are trying to identify them while also investigating the motive behind the killing. He added that Musabbir had recently told his wife he feared serious harm due to multiple enemies. When asked whether the killing was linked to extortion activities in Karwan Bazar, the DC said nothing conclusive had been found yet, but the angle is being considered.
