The Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has announced rewards for individuals providing information on muggers and extortionists amid a recent rise in mugging incidents in Sylhet and growing criticism over the failure to arrest perpetrators.
The announcement was made yesterday evening (9 April) through a post on the police force’s official Facebook page.
According to the statement, SMP Commissioner Abdul Kuddus Chowdhury has declared a “zero tolerance” policy against muggers and extortionists.
Alongside ongoing police operations, the initiative aims to encourage public participation in crime prevention by offering rewards to informants.
Speaking on the matter, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Monjurul Alam said police always work in coordination with the public, and this initiative is intended to further strengthen that collaboration.
Police said if any criminal is arrested through information provided by citizens they will be rewarded.
Authorities also assured that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
To submit information, citizens can use the GenieA App, contact the SMP hotline at 01339911742, or reach the additional deputy commissioner (Media & ICT) at 01320067038.
The Facebook post concluded with a call for public cooperation, stating that even a single piece of information could play a crucial role in curbing crime and building a safer society.
