An expatriate’s home in Cox’s Bazar’s newly formed Matamuhuri upazila was allegedly raided by an armed gang early Monday (8 June), with the homeowner’s wife and school-going daughter reportedly gang-raped after the assailants looted valuables from the house.
Police later arrested six suspects in connection with the incident, confirmed Matamuhuri Police Investigation Centre Inspector Md Masud.
The detainees were identified as Rezaul, Mehedi, Babu, Kefayet and Tanzid, along with another suspect whose identity could not immediately be confirmed. All are residents of different areas of Ward No. 3 under Purba Borbhola union.
The incident took place around 2:30am on Monday in the Dolnirgona area of Sikdarpara under Purba Borbhola union of the upazila, he said.
According to locals and police, a group of eight to 10 armed men allegedly entered the house cutting through window grilles. The gang looted cash, gold jewellery and other valuables before allegedly assaulting the expatriate’s wife and daughter and fleeing the scene.
Family members later rescued the two victims and took them to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex. As their condition worsened, they were shifted to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.
An uncle of the teenage victim told reporters that both his sister and niece were subjected to a brutal assault by the gang. He said the girl remained in critical condition and was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to excessive blood loss.
After being informed, Chakaria Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Abhijit Das and multiple police teams visited the scene and launched an investigation.
Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monir Hossain said police visited the scene immediately after being notified of the incident during the night.
“Following the incident, local residents and law enforcement members cordoned off the area. Police later conducted an overnight drive from Monday dawn into Tuesday morning and detained six suspects,” he said.
The OC added that police operations to identify and apprehend others involved in the crime were continuing alongside the ongoing investigation.
