A shrimp farm owner has been killed in Dulahazara union, Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, reportedly over a long-standing dispute involving the possession of a shrimp farm.
According to police, the body of Monjur Alam, 50, also known as Kalu, a resident of the Dumkhali area, was recovered from a canal adjacent to a shrimp farm known as Boro Dumkhali Ghona in the Malumghat area at around 4:30am today (3 April).
The body was later sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy after completing the inquest report, said Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monir Hossain.
OC Monir said that the exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report. He also stated that necessary legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family and verifying the allegations.
Family members alleged that a group of armed assailants attacked Monjur, beat him, and forced him underwater, causing death by suffocation.
The victim’s brother, Jamal Hossain, said that they own a four-acre shrimp farm, which had been under threat from a group attempting to take control of the land.
He claimed that the group had been issuing threats for a long time and had recently looted shrimp and other fish from the farm.
Jamal further claimed that one of the assailants has a relative working in law enforcement and that the attackers tried to conceal their identities by using a uniform.
