Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested another suspect linked to the “Boro Sazzad” group in a case filed over open firing on the residence of prominent industrialist Mostafizur Rahman, chairman of Smart Group.
According to RAB-7, the arrest was made during a late-night operation yesterday (26 March) in the Madrasah area under Hathazari, based on intelligence about the suspect’s location.
RAB said the detainee is an active member of the Boro Sazzad group and was involved in firing at the businessman’s house to intimidate and extort money.
Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-7 and Assistant Superintendent of Police ASM Mozzaffer Hossain told The Business Standard that the accused has been handed over to Chawkbazar Police Station for further legal action.
“Operation is still ongoing, and others involved in extortion and intimidation will be identified and brought to justice soon,” he said.
Earlier, police had arrested three other members of the Boro Sazzad group in connection with the incident.
The case relates to a 28 February shooting incident, which was a part of a continuing campaign of extortion and intimidation and saw four masked men armed with pistols, a submachine gun, a Chinese rifle, and a shotgun target the house.
The industrialist Rahman stated that Sazzad, who has long been in exile, first demanded Tk10 crore and later Tk5 crore. A previous attack on 2 January was similarly linked to ransom demands, and Sazzad reportedly sent a threatening WhatsApp message days before the latest incident, reading: “Wait and see.” Rahman’s family has remained under police protection since a similar attack in January.
