A local BNP office in Narayanganj’s Rupganj was set ablaze in an alleged petrol bomb attack in the early hours of today (14 February), police said.
The incident occurred around 3:45am in the Shimulia Bazar area.
Confirming the matter, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shabzel Hossain said, “Two individuals have been identified as suspects as the investigation continues.”
“Based on preliminary findings, miscreants smashed a window and poured ‘petrol or a similar like substance’ inside before setting the premises ablaze,” he added.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Rupganj Union Jubo Dal President Mansur Mia said, “The office, completed a week ago, was occupied until midnight and when the fire broke out early in the morning it was later doused with locals’ assistance, though furniture inside was damaged.”
He said they suspect a “petrol bomb” was used, as the fire spread rapidly.
Upazila BNP General Secretary Bachir Uddin Bacchu alleged that individuals linked to an opposing political party may have been involved.
OC Sabjel further said local BNP leaders are preparing to file a written complaint, after which necessary legal steps will be taken following due investigation.
