A Rohingya youth was killed in a landmine explosion near the Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban this morning (9 June).
The incident occurred around 9am in the Rezu Amtali border area, approximately 2.5 kilometres inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar 40 and the international zero line, confirmed Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh’s 34 Battalion in Cox’s Bazar.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Khalek, 30, son of Md Anu Mia of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp-1 in Ukhiya.
Lieutenant Colonel Khairul said Khalek was seriously injured in the explosion while on his way to clear an acacia plantation owned by Master Shah Alam in the Rezu Amtali border area of Ghumdhum union.
His younger brother, who was accompanying him, rescued him and took him to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he added.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mozammel Haque said the process of recovering the body and sending it to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy is underway.
