A video showing a police member being publicly punished over alleged negligence following a road accident in Rajshahi’s Puthia upazila has gone viral on social media.
The incident occurred after a head-on collision between a bus and a battery-run auto-rickshaw on the Rajshahi–Natore highway in the Pollapukur area, which left three people dead and at least six others injured yesterday (25 January).
In the video that began circulating widely on social media last night, the police member, identified as Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam of the Belpukur Police Station, seen standing while holding his ears allegedly imposed by the public who accused him of negligence of duty.
In the 1-minute and 23-second-long video footage, the person recording the video can be heard claiming that the officer failed to act responsibly at the scene and alleging that the bus driver involved in the crash had been released after taking bribes.
The speaker described the incident as “shameful” and criticised what he termed a failure of duty by law enforcement.
According to witnesses, the situation escalated as locals and students expressed anger over the handling of the accident. Later, members of the army arrived at the scene and rescued the police member.
Attempts were made to contact Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Arjun of Belpukur Police Station for comment, but repeated phone calls went unanswered.
Earlier that afternoon, the collision claimed the lives of Shanto Islam, a student of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of Varendra University in Rajshahi, along with an unidentified woman and a man aged around 40.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
In another video recorded shortly after the accident, a Varendra University student alleged that a bus operated by Rajokio Paribahan, travelling from the Puthia side, rammed directly into the auto-rickshaw. The student demanded the immediate arrest of the bus driver and proper legal action.
Following the accident, students and local residents blocked the Rajshahi–Natore highway, causing traffic congestion stretching several kilometres. Vehicular movement resumed around 8pm yesterday after the blockade was lifted.
However, shortly after traffic returned to normal, the police member was made to hold his ears publicly as punishment for alleged negligence.
