The prosecution submitted formal charges against former Narayanganj-4 MP Shamim Osman and 11 others over crimes against humanity committed during the July-August movement in Narayanganj.
The charges were filed this morning (19 January) with the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed.
Speaking to reporters, Tamim said that widespread killings took place in Narayanganj during the July-August movement, similar to other parts of the country.
“Based on the investigation report submitted by the investigation agency, the prosecution has filed formal charges before the tribunal in a crimes against humanity case. A total of 12 accused have been charged,” he said.
Shamim Osman, a senior Awami League leader, previously served as a member of parliament from the Narayanganj-4 constituency. His son, Imtinan Osman Ayan, also known as Ayan Osman, has been named as an accused in the case.
According to the prosecution, Narayanganj witnessed the highest number of killings during the July-August unrest. The accused were allegedly armed members of the Awami League and its affiliate organisation, Jubo League, who were involved in the violence.
Cases were filed against them on charges of crimes against humanity following the incidents. Arrest warrants have already been issued against the accused, the prosecution said, adding that their names had earlier not been disclosed in the interest of arrest.
