Unidentified individuals stole copper service wires supplying electricity to the three-storey residence of Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir in Bagerhat late last night (16 March).
According to police, thieves cut and took away the electric service wires running from the main line to the meter of the house located in the Amlapara area of the district.
Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Md Hasan Chowdhury said the incident was unfortunate and police had launched an investigation to identify those involved.
“Multiple teams are working to uncover the perpetrators and bring them under the law as soon as possible,” he said.
Police said several teams have already begun operations to identify the thieves and recover the stolen materials. As part of the investigation, a scrap shop owner in the town has been detained for questioning, as the stolen copper wires may have been sold at a scrap store.
Family sources said heavy rain and gusty winds hit the area last night, causing a power outage. Taking advantage of the darkness, the thieves entered the house premises and cut around two coils of copper wire from the main electric line to the meter.
Although CCTV cameras are installed around the house, the miscreants managed to avoid the cameras while carrying out the theft.
The estimated market value of the stolen copper wires is around Tk60,000.
