Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Sylhet to inaugurate “Notun Kuri Sports” initiative which will simultaneously be launched across all districts nationwide, said State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque.
The trip is scheduled for 30 April, Aminul said today (1 April) while inspecting the Sylhet District Stadium where the launching event will take place.
Aminul said, “The prime minister will personally attend the inauguration ceremony at the stadium as planned. Simultaneously, the initiative will be launched across all districts nationwide.”
He also sought cooperation from all to ensure the success of the visit.
According to the state minister, the “Notun Kuri Sports” initiative will include seven sporting events, including football and cricket.
He further noted that from the next academic year, sports will be made compulsory from Class 4, and the government will introduce sports scholarships.
He added that a sports allowance scheme has already been launched, with 500 athletes expected to be brought under its coverage.
Criticising the Awami League government, the state minister alleged widespread corruption in the name of development, citing the deteriorated condition of Sylhet District Stadium as evidence.
He confirmed that instructions have been given to the relevant authorities to undertake renovation work.
The full itinerary of the Prime Minister’s visit will be announced at a later date, according to Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam.
Earlier, on 21 January, Tarique Rahman began his election campaign from Sylhet.
