Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Party, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the new parliament is not an ordinary one and is shaped by the sacrifices of the July Uprising martyrs, with people expecting the establishment of justice from it.
Speaking at the maiden session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad today (12 March), the opposition leader remembered the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Language Movement, and the July Uprising.
He congratulated newly elected Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, noting that by resigning from his party position, the speaker can act impartially and treat all members equally.
Shafiqur said that parliamentary politics in Bangladesh had often been inactive or limited in the past, but expressed hope that the new Speaker’s leadership would support a functional and effective parliament.
He urged the speaker to prevent the house from being used for personal attacks on MPs, noting that past sessions sometimes focused on such matters rather than public welfare.
Highlighting the presence of many first-time MPs, he said they could learn from experienced members to contribute to a positive parliamentary environment.
Referring to the July Uprising, he concluded, “We want justice,” emphasising that ensuring justice in parliament could promote fairness and help address societal wrongdoing.
