There is no shortage in fuel supply, but panic buying has led to long queues at filling stations, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku said today (2 April).
He made the remarks during a question-and-answer session in the seventh sitting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
During the session, Cumilla-4 lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah said petrol pumps were shutting down, particularly in Sylhet, while long queues were being seen in different areas.
He also alleged that the minister was avoiding the issue and asked when the situation would be acknowledged and resolved.
In response, the minister said fuel demand had increased following recent Iran-related developments.
“Previously, fuel stocks that took one to one-and-a-half days to sell out are now being exhausted within two hours,” he said.
This has triggered panic buying among consumers, leading to long lines at filling stations, he added.
“The claim that petrol is not being supplied is incorrect. Fuel is being supplied to pumps every day,” the minister said.
