Bangladesh Navy has strengthened security measures for fuel-carrying vessels operating in the country’s maritime routes amid the prevailing international and regional security situation.
The navy remains on round-the-clock duty to ensure the security of Bangladesh’s maritime boundary and sea lanes, which are vital for the safe movement of commercial vessels and the country’s import-export activities.
According to a press release issued today (12 March), vessels carrying crude oil are the primary source of various fuels used in Bangladesh, including LNG, LPG and transport fuels such as petrol, diesel and jet fuel. The navy has long been ensuring the safety of these crude oil carriers, and the security measures have recently been further intensified, considering the current situation.
As part of the enhanced security, naval patrols and surveillance have been strengthened in areas adjacent to Chattogram seaport, the deep sea and other important maritime routes associated with fuel transportation.
Under the security arrangement, the Bangladesh Navy has deployed warships and high-speed boats, while maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters are also conducting aerial surveillance.
Through these platforms, continuous sea patrols, aerial monitoring and observation of suspicious vessels are being carried out to ensure the safe movement, anchoring and port entry and exit of fuel-carrying ships.
The additional security measures have been taken mainly as a precaution to strengthen overall protection of the country’s fuel transportation system, the release said.
Special operational teams of the navy are also on standby in coastal and maritime areas to take swift action against any possible smuggling, sabotage or illegal activities along the sea routes.
Bangladesh Navy is working in coordination with port authorities, the coast guard, law enforcement agencies and relevant energy organisations to ensure the overall security of fuel supply.
The navy said such security arrangements will continue to safeguard the country’s maritime territory, critical infrastructure and economic interests, while ensuring uninterrupted commercial activities along the sea routes.
