The government has confirmed that Myanmar has so far completed verification of data for 3.5 lakh Rohingya refugees it received from Dhaka, identifying 2.5 lakh individuals as previously residing in Myanmar, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman told the parliament today (30 March).
Responding to a question from Chattogram‑15 MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, Khalilur said Bangladesh has submitted information on Rohingya refugees in six phases for verification by the Myanmar government, reports Prothom Alo.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam answered the question on behalf of the minister.
Bangladesh has submitted data on 8,29,036 Rohingyas to Myanmar in six phases, of which 3,54,751 have been verified and 253,964 identified as “former residents of Myanmar”.
The foreign minister noted that due to ongoing conflict in Myanmar, the repatriation process cannot be initiated at present.
“The only sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis is safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation,” he stated, emphasising that Bangladesh will continue diplomatic, legal and humanitarian efforts with support from the international community.
The minister also underscored Bangladesh’s support for international judicial mechanisms.
He highlighted the Gambia v Myanmar case currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, brought over alleged genocide against the Rohingya, adding that Dhaka will provide financial assistance to support this legal process.
