A mobile court fined a man Tk5 lakh in Chattogram yesterday (31 March) while he was illegally extracting soil from farmland and selling it to brick kilns.
Abdul Momen, 37, was detained during a drive in the early hours of yesterday in the embankment area of Temuhani Beel under Satkania upazila.
Police said an organised group has long been involved in cutting soil from farmland and supplying it to brick kilns. Acting on a tip-off, yesterday’s drive was led by Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ariful Islam Siddique, they added.
Later, a mobile court led by Satkania upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Shamsuzzaman slapped the detainee with a Tk5 lakh fine.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Additional SP Ariful said the accused admitted his involvement in the illegal activity as part of an organised group.
He added that such drives will continue to protect agricultural land.
