A medical board has decided to perform brain surgery on Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, the prime minister’s political adviser and lawmaker for Dhaka-8, who is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, a BNP leader said today (13 March).
Dr Rafiqul Islam, health affairs secretary of the party, said the board of specialist physicians reviewed Abbas’s condition and concluded that surgery was necessary.
“The medical board, formed by expert doctors, reviewed everything and decided to perform brain surgery on BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas,” Rafiqul told reporters. “He was taken to the operating theatre a short while ago, at 3:10pm.”
He said a CT scan conducted earlier in the morning revealed a deterioration in Mirza Abbas’s condition, prompting the convening of an emergency virtual medical board.
The consent of family members has also been obtained, he added.
Rafiqul said the board comprises some of the country’s leading neurosurgeons.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital after Jummah prayers today, when the medical board briefed him in detail on the politician’s condition.
Earlier, BNP Media Cell Member Shairul Kabir Khan had said that on doctors’ advice, preparations were being made to transfer Mirza Abbas to Singapore by air ambulance.
He was supposed to be flown to Singapore at 6pm today for advanced medical treatment.
Mirza Abbas, also a BNP Standing Committee member, was admitted to Evercare Hospital after falling ill on Wednesday evening (11 March).
According to sources close to the family, he suddenly lost consciousness while drinking water during iftar. As his condition did not improve, he was later admitted to the hospital late at night for treatment.
