A man was killed in a clash stemming from a dispute over the naming of a mosque in Sylhet on Friday (10 April), police said.
The deceased has been identified as Delwar Hossain Dilbar, 50, son of the late Mokhon Mia, a resident of Galangsha village under Mogolgaon union in the district.
The incident took place in the afternoon in front of the Panchayati Jame Mosque in the village, where a mediation meeting had been convened to resolve the ongoing dispute between two groups over the mosque’s name.
According to police and locals, tensions had been brewing for several days between residents of Galangsha and a neighbouring area over the naming issue. Following Friday prayers, both groups sat for arbitration, but an argument soon escalated into a clash.
During the clash, Dilbar was critically injured after being stabbed in the neck by members of the rival group. Locals rushed him to Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Later in the evening, his body was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Jalalabad Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Habib told The Business Standard that the altercation between the two groups quickly turned violent, leading to the fatal attack.
Police remained deployed at the scene until around 10pm to maintain law and order.
