A Dhaka court has placed a man on a four-day remand in a case filed over allegations of fraud by posing as the prime minister’s personal secretary.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after a hearing this afternoon (24 March).
Confirming the development, Rafikul Islam, sub-inspector of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (prosecution division), said the accused Md Abdus Salam, was arrested on 15 March around 7am from the Agargaon area of the capital.
The following day, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Bulbul Ahmed of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, produced him before the court and sought a five-day remand for interrogation. The court then sent him to jail and fixed today for the remand hearing.
According to the remand plea, the accused had admitted involvement during initial questioning and that preliminary investigation found evidence of his links to the alleged offences.
Investigators also said further interrogation was necessary to identify unnamed accomplices, verify their whereabouts, and examine the suspect’s mobile phone, call records, messages and other digital communications.
Defence lawyers sought bail and opposed the remand petition, but the court rejected the plea and granted a four-day remand.
According to the case statement, Salam had long been impersonating the Prime Minister’s PS and allegedly used the fake identity to carry out fraudulent activities, including illegal financial transactions and job scams in government and private institutions.
