A Dhaka court has ordered that Md Abdus Salam, arrested for defrauding people by posing as the personal secretary of the prime minister, be sent to jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order this afternoon (16 March) after a hearing.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russel of the prosecution department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the development.
He said the investigating officer, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Bulbul Ahmed, produced the accused before the court and sought a five-day remand for questioning.
Defence lawyers also filed a petition seeking bail for the accused.
After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and fixed 24 March for the hearing on the remand application.
According to the remand petition, the accused admitted his involvement in the incident during preliminary interrogation. Investigators have also found initial evidence and information linking him to the allegations.
The petition said the accused gave inconsistent responses when asked about the names and addresses of unidentified accomplices.
It added that a five-day remand is necessary to gather information about the identities and locations of the alleged associates and to question him about his mobile phone, call records, messages and other digital communication data.
Abdus Salam was arrested from the Agargaon area of the capital at around 7am yesterday (15 March).
According to the case statement, he had been using the identity of the prime minister’s personal secretary for a long time.
Under this false identity, he allegedly carried out various fraudulent activities, including illegal financial transactions and recruitment-related dealings in government and private offices.
Authorities began investigating after complaints and information about his activities reached different levels of the government.
Following verification of the information and evidence, a team from an intelligence agency conducted a raid at his residence in the Agargaon Water Tank area early in the morning and detained him.
