Om Birla, speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, will arrive in Dhaka to represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s new government led by the BNP on Tuesday (17 February).
According to a press release issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Birla’s participation reflects India’s commitment to Bangladesh’s democratic transition and highlights the close and enduring ties between the two neighbouring countries.
The release said the visit underscores the importance New Delhi places on its partnership with Bangladesh, particularly in areas such as trade, connectivity, energy cooperation and regional security.
The incoming Bangladesh government is set to be led by Tarique Rahman, chairman of the BNP, following the party’s victory in the 13th national election.
Earlier, Bangladesh formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in. However, according to a PTI report, which cited people familiar with the matter, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with visiting French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai on 17 February.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by representatives from several countries and will formally mark the start of Bangladesh’s new government.
