Legal action will be taken in all killing incidents, including those involving police personnel, both before and after 5 August, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir said today (27 March).
“Several people, including police members, had lost their lives and that action will be taken in each case in accordance with the law,” he told journalists at the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) headquarters.
The IGP also said that citizens must follow the law to build a peaceful and civilised society. “Young people should avoid resorting to blockades and protests at the slightest provocation, as such actions cause harm to everyone.”
Ali Hossain Fakir further said the country is facing a large number of educated unemployed people, while the banking sector is under pressure due to money being laundered abroad.
He also warned that some young people are becoming involved in drug abuse and snatching.
The IGP reiterated that the police have a zero-tolerance stance against drugs and said law enforcement agencies are playing an important role in maintaining law and order. He also claimed that law enforcement agencies had delivered one of the best elections in the country’s history.
Referring to reports of fuel black marketing amid the current crisis, the IGP said, “Buying fuel from one or two filling stations and selling it at a slightly higher price does not generate significant profit, adding that there is a need to improve moral awareness in society.”
“Police have proposed to the government to transform Dhaka and other divisional cities into smart and safe cities, and that the process is underway,” he added.
When asked about a letter reportedly issued by the Rajshahi Range DIG regarding showing arrested banned Awami League leaders in new cases after they secured bail, the IGP said he would not comment on any matter that is under investigation.
