A local leader of the Bangladesh Krishak League was hacked to death in Mohanpur Upazila of Rajshahi last night (28 March) following a dispute over irrigation water that flowed into an adjacent field.
The deceased, Kamrul Hasan Mithu, 40, served as the general secretary of the Jahanabad Union unit of the Krishak League and was a resident of Karisa Durgapur village in the upazila.
He died around 9:30pm while receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
According to police, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon when Mithu was irrigating his land. A pipe reportedly burst during the process, causing water to spill into an onion field owned by Md Saddam. An argument over the incident escalated, during which Saddam allegedly attacked Mithu with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed Mithu to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The accused went into hiding immediately after the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Mohanpur Police Station, Yamin Ali, said a murder case would be filed against Saddam and that efforts were underway to arrest him.
Mithu’s body will be handed over to his family following an autopsy at the Rajshahi Medical College morgue today.
